    I'm curious as well.
    酒 ok
    ??
    やきとりok
    楽 ok
    other character ?
    it only seems 2 or 3 strokes to me under 山
    none of the characters with that placement of 山 I find seem to make any sense.
    and you'd think it'd be a relatively common character if used in a sign.

      Attached: 1 image My guess would be やきとり + 炭 + 楽 but search gives me nothing for that combination. Who can help me read this? たいやき 神田達磨 taiyaki restaurant of the Kanda Daruma chain The restaurant shows caligraphy that I can’t read. (detail from a photo by Alan D. @shiawase @kornelis I was intrigued enough to do a little search, seems it's actually 文楽...

      @mario @kornelis
      good detecting.

      the 山 is a *very* stylised 亠 with a lot of space before the two strokes underneath. I suppose even a stylised 山 would have a more distinct join between strokes 2 and 3.

      and what does yakitori have to do with puppet shows? or vice versa? I didn't think Ueno was known for bunraku.

      goes to show how you can lock on to a known shape.

      @shiawase @kornelis maybe there was Ueno puppet theatre there at some point (it looks like it's under the railway arches)? No idea 😁
