Moral of the story, you should never, ever use a 301 without explicitly controlling caching, but vast chunks of the web don't do this (including many registrars "redirect this domain to another site" functionality 😱 ). Anyway, good news for X/twitter is they have not made that particular mistake with x.com

Web trivia tangent: When you do a 301 redirect, how long can a browser simply send later requests to the new location without touching the old?
Well, it "permanent" so… unless otherwise specified by cache / expires headers, *forever*
A lot of web software by default doesn't set any of those headers on a 301. So if you redirect x.example to y.example, and then *months later* decide to use x.example for something, people who saw the redirect may just go y.example

You can't undo this, because the affected people were never see x.example, and nothing you can do on y.example can tell the browser to forget the redirect it saw on x.example.
If you redirected y.example back to x the browser just sits in a loop until it gives up, but in that case, you can break out by making y redirect to a unique url, with a query string or whatever

This is one of the reasons It's Complicated, because if you aren't careful you create redirect loops. They seem to have avoided the most catastrophic one at least…
