   my theory is the gman in halflife is a multidimensional advanced lifeform. his employers are other multidimensional lifeforms. their interest is monitoring single-dimensional lifeforms as they grasp dimensional and temporal travel. their interest in earth is because of dimensional travel experiments and because of the dimensional rift attracting the most powerful single-dimensional empire that can dimensional travel, an actual threat. their interest is in controlling the proliferation of intradimensional teleportation.

     The Combine seems to be very advanced at conventional engineering but they only acquired dimensional traveling by conquering other planets early in dimensional travel development, they can leverage the pillaged technology but aren't good at developing it further. That is why they can build a Dyson sphere but can't develop a portal gun like the more primitive Earth can.

     I actually dislike this about the story, it seems unrealistic but convenient for the story that the Combine can't innovate teleportation technology but Earth can develop dimensional travel and teleportation before getting a cheat boost from studying natural dimensional rifts like Xen.

     @sun i think it would need something like 'war of the worlds', where the way to beat the invaders is something inherent about earth. although that wouldn't make a good 'safe the world' shooter, so i guess they just wrote themselves into a corner there (which they seem to think too, given that they just gave up on the series)

     @lain I hope they just got distracted because everybody was getting rich off Steam not because they got bored or painted themselves into a corner but yeah it feels very possible they were concerned enough about quality that they didn't want to make a crappy sequel and they couldn't find a satisfactory way to move forward

     @sun @lain considering the bits I've seen about the internal development of half life 2 I believe they knew they were not capable of completing it when it was still mid-development and that there would never be a half life 3

     If they can get here with FTL transport, none of our tech or diseases are going to touch them. But then again, they have no incentive to come here if that is the case except to observe.
