@mrsaturday i just hope he leaves the green card program the fuck alone, and he seems to have higher priorities with regards to immigration, but i don't know. setting an isolationist precedent is not very good news for me and my future here, since i'm banking on the green card program for my medium-term future

@zonk @mrsaturday I haven't looked closely but it sounds like initially they are mostly concerned with illegal aliens that have been convicted of felonies, I need to find a neutral summary of his plans somewhere

@zonk RFK is going to do some damage in the good way (we unironically needed a Cali hippie in charge of food) and hopefully Kash Patel gets a chance to hollow out the FBI and get some of the DNC-lackey bureaucrats out. A TV doctor running the CDC isn't great, though.

@zonk @mrsaturday I have definitely seen people talk about ending birthright citizenship however that would take a constitutional amendment to do normally, I have tried to think of how they could "backdoor" it without actually amending the constitution, I haven't been able to but there have been times in distant past where it was heavily weakened legislatively so it's possible.

@sun @mrsaturday that will be the start, but it will not end there. trump-aligned politicians are attempting to get rid of birthright citizenship, citizenship by marriage, and are planning on abolishing pretty significant parts of the green card program. they will start with the illegals because it is palatable and sets up a great policy base for getting rid of the legals. even if everything isn't implemented right away, the future trajectory that is being set up is pretty clear, especially with trump picking people that wrote sections of project 2025 for his cabinet

@zonk @mrsaturday its happened in my lifetime with republicans before so I wasnt initially worried, but not with trump republicans so I have adjusted my worry upwards

@sun @mrsaturday having all 3 branches of government in coordination is a scary thing, no matter who's in power. we are in line to see a lot of shenanigans being executed. you could argue that the pendulum has swung the other way, and now that there is a will to try anything that sticks, i would not discount them using this alignment to brute force a bunch of illegal laws and regulations

@zonk @mrsaturday I kind of think that nothing is going to end up happening to legal non-citizens but I understand you don't have the luxury of not worrying about it. and by extension, I consider you a friend and don't want bad things to happen to my friends so if you're concerned about it then I am going to pay closer attention and actually care.

@sun @mrsaturday yeah. i would say that trump himself isn't the problem, but the crazies that have his ear are. we're seeing all kinds of freaks crawling out of the woodwork and being given important posts. truly, we are living in interesting times

@sun @mrsaturday thank you. my belief is that immigrants are a great canary in the coalmine, because we're the first on the chopping block of any oppressive policies. at the end of the day i'm a big boy (and i am in the extremely fortunate position to have backups upon backups in case shit hits the fan). watch out for your own sake, these things escalate pretty quickly

@sun @zonk The original wording of the amendment was an oversight IIRC

@nerthos @zonk @sun They're trying to pull China: Brave New World Edition and the people that aren't directly benefiting from labor being devalued to a fraction of what it was 30-40 years ago are refusing to adapt, even to the point of checking out of society entirely. Replacing "legacy Americans" with the poor and desperate from all over the world is key to their plans. Yes, we should do what you say, but that's not what it's about. It's about snuffing out the American dream and creating a society of alienated, paranoid, exhausted, and overworked consumers that rely on overtime to keep the lights on and take whatever's left over after the bills and fill the void with slop subscriptions and cheap dopamine hits.

@zonk @sun @mrsaturday They have like 340 million inhabitants, to be fair they don't really need more people, their most reasonable position would be taking only qualified people for citizenship going forward.

@nerthos @sun @zonk The thought of AI capably parsing through the NSA storage servers makes my skin crawl. It's only going to get worse, friend.

@mrsaturday @sun @zonk Oh I know, the US government has been gushing wet about the idea of having the kind of internal control China has for decades. They wish they could be the CCP.
