The biggest problem with the Democratic Party is its belief that America is white or that only white Americans matter. Everyone else is a "special interest" to be indulged only if it doesn't ruffle white people's feathers.
Republicans, by winning a majority of white voters, have greater legitimacy in their eyes, even when the head of the party is someone like Trump.
That Democrats have effectively turned themselves into stock brokers for "socially liberal" wealthy white people doesn't help.

"Fund the police!" is a direct repudiation of BLM and the idea that Democrats owe Black people anything as long as the economy keeps ticking and wealth continues being extracted to the predominately white upper class. Oppressive and ultra-violent police is the system working as intended, actually.

Democrats like Gavin Newsom are thrilled to criminalize homeless people because they would rather pack the poor in prisons, where they can be forced to work, than do anything to tackle a housing and cost of living crisis that primarily affects marginalized people and the working poor.

And when Democrats fall on hard times, politically, and feel stung by the rejection of white voters, their first instinct is always to abandon the minority groups and social issues they think are dragging them down.
They'll make it up to the rich later, see, when they clean up Republicans' messes.

Understood this way, the 2024 Democratic campaign was a sales pitch to big business and older, affluent white Americans: "We will be better for you than Trump and better at keeping Those People in line without all the unnecessary drama and instability."
And those groups said: "Nah, we prefer the fascism, actually."
But Democrats weren't talking to the rest of us. They assumed the threat of Trump would be enough to scare us into submission.
So now they're recalibrating.

Democrats are looking for ways to fit themselves into the "new political reality" because Trump is now normal.
Some of us may die but that's a sacrifice they're willing to make.

At the national level, Democrats see themselves as bureaucrats and middle managers, keeping the economy stable and staying out of the way of corporations and the donor class.
Like the Rockefeller Republicans they are, they only care about social issues insofar as it reduces conflict and promotes economic stability. Otherwise marginalized groups get scapegoated and targeted by bipartisan social purges.
This mindset works hand in glove with conservatives and can never challenge fascism.

Democrats understand perfectly well that Black people, Latinos, immigrants, queer people, poor people, and disproportionately, women, are exploited and oppressed but that is also how the social hierarchy and engine of economics has always worked in this country.
