    Over the past 24 hrs while Mastodon was discoursing about whether or not starter packs are OK, and if slow progress is more due to lack of funding or different priorities, and if people that choose other social networks are just evil, lazy, shiftless people who love to lick VCs boots or are people that just want a better UX...

    BlueSky added another 1 million users.

      "people that choose other social networks are just evil, lazy, shiftless people who love to lick VCs boots"

      This kind of absolutism really makes me despair. People will go where they feel comfortable. That is just a fundamental reality. And demeaning them for doing so is tragically self-defeating for Mastodon.

      @mekkaokereke Starter Packs are an impressive innovation, no question about it. I joined Bluesky as soon as I could, mostly to get “lstaples” before someone else took it and to hedge my bets. But I think the fediverse is the best long-term solution. Also, this is the only place that lets me follow both Bluesky and Threads [which I will never join] users.

      @admin @FediTips

      The problem is that if it's not built in, it's a less smooth UX. You know that it's a less smooth UX, and that the UX can be improved without $15M of VC funding. Mastodon isn't getting $15M, but that UX will be fixed within a year. Like I said, Mastodon is changing... Just very slowly.

      Black person says "The USA could be improved."
      Response: IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN LEAVE!

      I get a similar response for suggesting improvements to Mastodon.🤷🏿♂️

      @mekkaokereke While people here argue if "welcome packs" are OK, other people here have been putting such packs together for years already. @FediTips lists several on their website. I think a bunch of my initial follows came from https://fedi.directory/, they've been around for a while. The problem is not that we lack these things; the "problem" for a lot of people is that they are decentralized, and that means they require the new user to make some choices and seek things out.

      And for a lot of people, that's an improvement. That's why we're here. To not have $15M in VC funding pushing its preferred content into our faces. But hey if you want the welcome packs they're right there, go use 'em.

      @mekkaokereke honestly I see the point you're making here but I think this is a good thing on some level?

      I mean on the one hand you have "slow and considered discourse about whether a certain feature is really beneficial to the community"

      on the other hand you have "rapid growth"

      the former is preferable to me!

      (nb: although I value that "slow" approach in many cases, NOT when it comes to safety concerns. Those are urgent and the Mastodon devs are TOO slow to address those)

      @cultdev

      Just by your post, I can tell that:

      1) you're not Black

      2) you don't know many Black people

      Mastodon is *worse* than Twitter for most Black people, from the perspective of harassment, nazi death threats, and ignorant non-Black folk who don't listen to Black folk but are absolutely convinced that they know what's best and safest for Black folk.

      Twitter and Mastodon are both nazi bars. The difference is, Twitter has enough Black people to form a safe community. Mastodon doesn't.

      @cultdev

      Many of the Black people going to BlueSky now, tried Mastodon first, and found it unsafe. And none of y'all who have so many cute things to say to me now, cared or did a damn thing about it.

      BlueSky is the first Twitter alternative that offers a basic level of safety and community for Black people. So they jumped on it.

      But so many clowns on Mastodon, instead of saying "We too should provide a safe community!" just get salty at BlueSky for it, and make disrespectful comments.
