Youjo Senki is.. at its core tempered rationality and cold logic vs unchained emotion and blind faith.
It always saddens me to see people miss that aspect of the narrative

@Rasp An atheist gets isekai'd by God and forced to pray to him in order to survive.
The concept is interesting.
@Paradox I'm listening to the 12th volume. things are FUCCCCCCCCKED
@Rasp I know Dragon Maid changes the order of some of the chapters.
Back when CR still had comments, half the time people in the Slime Isekai chat would be complaining about how there was too much talking and not enough fighting, forgetting that it's a wordbuilding story, not a fighting story. Maybe Tanya's is similar?
@Rasp @Paradox I had no idea the LN was different and better (and I trust your taste as a fellow HW:C enjoyer). Will check it out!
@ciatmusings @Paradox I wouldn't say its immensely better in the long run as I think the anime is quite good but the LN definitely explains tanyas character better she's not nearly as unhinged as the anime made her. I think the movie did a very good job with her.
@Paradox its not that so much as the anime changes Tanyas character alot. take the scene where Ivonova is first assigned as Tanya's assistant. In the LN she's actually pleased to be working with someone she knows is reliable. In the anime she's bitchy about it for no reason.
Also in the very first episode (which is shown out of order) Tanya has two of her squad sent to man a pillbox because they refused to follow orders and put their fellow soldiers at risk. This is visually portrayed as her doing something malicious or evil when it was nothing of the sort. That pillbox was going to be manned by somebody sending those insubordinate who already have deathwish there was the most logical option to avoid those two idiots getting actually good mages killed alongside them.
@Rasp "The Saga of Tanya the Evil"
Guess they were taking a few more creative liberties with that framing than I thought.
She definitely comes off as intelligent and resourceful but also a bit... zealous? Aggressively unhinged? Like she's more into her new role in life than most others around her are.
Granted, I'm basing this on cultural osmosis exposure. I've never even opened the anime. This is how I've viewed her, and also why I never felt compelled to open it.
@Paradox that's not even an accurate translation of the title. "The Military Chronicles of a little girl" is a more accurate translation. there is no implication she's inherently evil that's a dubism.
@Rasp Yeah that's what I figured. Before this chat, I assumed it was a minor embellishment, but now I guess that's the anime producers leaning into it more than they should've.
Incompetent or warmonger, place your bets.
@Paradox thing is she's hyper-competent she wants badly to have a job in the rear where she doesn't have to fight anymore. She's certainly no warmonger if that's how she appears to outsiders. She's just doing her job the best she can so she can... ya know... not die. Also get a posting that means she doesn't have to do this anymore. She's practically tearing her hair out having been asked to do the impossible over and over.
@Rasp I meant more the people that she works for.
Tired of being an office worker with an unreasonable boss? Now you can be a soldier in the middle of a war with an unreasonable boss!
@Paradox its the loli nazi jokes that annoy me. its like... the kinds of people she's made bigoted comments against are soviet-style communists. There are no concentration camps in the empire, nobody is being persecuted and the germans didn't start the war.
