@deadheat Last time I checked, most Chinese businesses in China are legally obliged to accept cash unlike most countries.

@deadheat I'm not in China, otherwise the CCP would have sent their top freedom takers to get me long ago and I would know a lot more 漢字 (or rather 汉字).

It's ironic isn't it, one of the least free countries insists on keeping the freedom of cash; https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Caixin/China-fines-KFC-franchise-others-for-rejecting-cash-payments#:~:text=The%20fines%20are%20part%20of,country's%20appeal%20following%20the%20pandemic.

@Suiseiseki I didn't know you were in China, I hope you are being able to stay free there somehow

@deadheat Even the Chinese know that proprietary garbage often falls (you do not want the country to totally fall over when the internet or power grid collapses), you shouldn't torture old people (you shouldn't torture young people either, but hey) and also how it's hard to get money from some tourists who cannot get access to Chinese "digital payments", but can easily get their hands on plenty of cold hard cash.

Legally there is a requirement that stores accept government currency, although many, many businesses have illegally gone cashless.

@Suiseiseki I hope this is true and that the Chinese can still have this little bit of economic freedom in that hell at least. He paid every transaction he made there with his cell phone (taxis, hotel, etc) and didn't even try using cash at the train station, it was very disgusting to see.
