   making one’s own site, independent of a big commercial platform
   is not *very* hard. but it’s hard enough to enable big commercial platforms to very easily capture massive amounts of people’s creative output.

   and because of network effects, their value is not just in their ease of use but the promise of an audience which itself is a thing that is one of the most difficult things to build with a personal website.

   I feel like while a lot of us tech folk have the skills to physically build the right thing to solve this problem; we don’t have enough social awareness to understand what the problem actually is or what a suitable solution can look like.

   and if some us do i find the good ideas encounter the most righteous nitpicky puritan resistance. So while i want to get involved it’s hard to trust even if someone is willing to learn about, for instance, building accessible websites; or hearing when a design decision is causing harm to a marginal group

     so, the thing to do is scope down.

     I don’t want to recapture all the people on commercial social media.

     In fact, a lot of them are dangerous bigots that I affirmatively want no where near me. Our goal should not be universal appeal.

     Let’s scale down to—- what do we need to build for a queer teenager in russia?

     what do we need to build for our 70 year old mother?

     what do we need to build for that BLM activist?

     laser targets. thousands of different tries.

     fucking linktree, okay? doesn’t it just make you angry that this exists?

     We can build a gui that lets you enter in a list of links

     it can be a self contained html file as output

     that file can be put anywhere

     we can streamline the process of pointing an authoring tool at a webhost. If people can do nintendo friend codes, they can friend code a host to an html builder
