making one’s own site, independent of a big commercial platform
is not *very* hard. but it’s hard enough to enable big commercial platforms to very easily capture massive amounts of people’s creative output.
and because of network effects, their value is not just in their ease of use but the promise of an audience which itself is a thing that is one of the most difficult things to build with a personal website.
I feel like while a lot of us tech folk have the skills to physically build the right thing to solve this problem; we don’t have enough social awareness to understand what the problem actually is or what a suitable solution can look like.
and if some us do i find the good ideas encounter the most righteous nitpicky puritan resistance. So while i want to get involved it’s hard to trust even if someone is willing to learn about, for instance, building accessible websites; or hearing when a design decision is causing harm to a marginal group
