     @sjvn ah, the bad old times. if i think about old technology i don't feel old for some reason, i just realize again how good things are now generally speaking. although i want my usenet back. that was a great way to discover interesting things and people.

     I've seen things you wouldn't believe, like phones permanently attached to walls. Children required to treat adults with respect. Literature written on paper. Art created by hand. Addresses kept in spiral notebooks. Saving until you had the funds for something. Sharing a room with siblings. Walking up to the TV to change the channel. Listening just to be polite.

     yup. me too. back in the 1980s, the only way i could do research online, FROM PUERTO RICO, was with gopher thru NYU or Columbia's system.

     kids have no idea how early adopters (mostly Gen Xers) made the internet viable by stubbornly make it work beyond what the MIC thought possible.

     @denix @sjvn I’ve been “online” since using a DEC PDP-1103 using a hardwired physical dialup beginning in late 1979 via a GTE Sylvania “intranet”. We were all connected to transfer our lab results from remote locations back to the home base in Towanda NY. Baud rate was really really really low.

     I remember using DOS, later Spry Mosaic w Windows and connecting to NASA using a fast 1200 baud modem in 1990 - 1992 or so. Fun times.
