   Can you point out how the cutting-edge German constitution is any different in this regard?

   Or how keeping rehabilitated criminals from taking office in politics would be more democratic?

     Because your constitution and laws are little, how to say, are a bit archaic.

     Just because you had some democracy & rule of law in the 18th century, does not mean that it's still good quality democracy & rule of law in the 21st century.

     Think of it like the Ford T of democracy.

     Funny that makes me think of that old fascist Ford, who literally supported the German Nazis with quite a bit a cash.
