    The chemtrail conspiracy theory is the erroneous belief that long-lasting condensation trails left in the sky by high-flying aircraft are actually "chemtrails" consisting of chemical or biological agents, sprayed for nefarious purposes undisclosed to the general public. Believers in this conspiracy theory say that while normal contrails dissipate relatively quickly, contrails that linger must contain additional substances. Those who subscribe to the theory speculate that the purpose of the chemical release may be solar radiation management, weather modification, psychological manipulation, human population control, biological or chemical warfare, or testing of biological or chemical agents on a population, and that the trails are causing respiratory illnesses and other health problems. The claim has been dismissed by the scientific community. There is no evidence that purported chemtrails differ from normal water-based contrails routinely left by high-flying aircraft under certain atmospheric conditions.   You are right. The Luddites were protesting for higher wages and higher quality production, but the derogatory definition is commonly understood and has made its way into dictionaries.
  I will likely continue to use the derogatory meaning.
  I just haven't found a synonym that also implies being from a previous century.
  The Albertan mythos of "oil only" has held this province back economically and socially for decades.
  Sadly, the UCP seem quite happy with that.

  @ScribblersEmporium @persagen Luddites isn't the right word. And luddite doesn't mean what most think it means. There are a lot of other adjectives for that arrogant, wilfully-ignorant, power-hungry, science-illiterate, xenophobic, religious zealot, short-sighted, piece of crap. ;)
  It really is a crime that Alberta wasn't taking advantage of its oil wealth to plan ahead and be a world leader in green energy. It was an amazing opportunity that they just let lapse.
