@lain I dunno, some people are dumb and will do any random thing as long as it doesn't affect them too much. Part of why this works is how gradual he was. If he went full force immediately, some people would make a fuss and probably would be enough community about it to not take. Another part is community force. Even if you're dissatisfied, you're more likely to conform if everybody else is, because if you don't, now you're the odd one out, and everybody is looking at you. Plus you don't know who feels the same, it's risky to find out, and they'll stand by silent as you get taken away because they only know they feel sorry for you, not who else does. There's no coordination, just rule by fear. Especially that bit about telling students to rat each other out. Now there's no trust between them at all.
Had to watch this movie about it in highschool. Honestly, having a little personal experience with cults of various sorts, and how impressionable kids are, I don't doubt it happened.
Also, didn't we just experience ~50%+ of the human population in developed countries do this exact same thing overnight? If it was over getting jabbed, it was over virtue signalling about 🇺🇦, or Q, and the list goes on.
