   Today I learned their are WordPress plugin authors who:

   1. Release commercial plugins under the GPL, and
   2. Stomp their little feet and call people thieves when they edit out the license check code in those Free Software plugins.

   If you don't want people to edit and redistribute your code, you should *not* be releasing it under the GPL. And if you do, and then complain about it, we're going to laugh at you.

     @tek@freeradical.zone They are free to complain all they want. They can't do anything legally however, so it does not matter.

     I don't even use WordPress, but that's just silly. Did they genuinely not understand what they were signing up for?

     @tek It’s worth noting that they are forced to license WordPress plugins as GPL. They aren’t there for the license, they are there for the customer base. There was a whole drama about this years ago.

     If they could sell plugins under another license, they would.

     @jerclarke True, but they still released GPL’d software. You don’t get to do that and then grouse that people are exercising their written freedoms. I mean, if the WordPress team hadn’t released it under the GPL in the first place, they probably wouldn’t have anything to write a plugin for.

     Wasn't this also the origin of Jenkins? (I.e. the owners of Hudson failed to understand the implications of the GPL.)

     @suetanvil Seems like it. Oracle was all like “you have to do what we say!”, and a thousand developers were like “nah, dog”.
