That's a strange expression that we had to learn in school.

I wonder if people really say that it's raining cats and dogs in these days or if they say something else. Like it's pouring?

@MummaBear I guess it would be. I tried Stroh undiluted once. 80%. Did not taste as strong as one would think. But just tried the taste. I was once invited to some Aussies for some talk and drink. It was some 55% swill. Worst hangover of my life. 😬

@MummaBear @EvolLove The metric system is easier to calculate I think. But other systems add some meaning to stuff imho. E.g until about 15 years ago dimensions of planks etc were measured and sold in inches , e.g. "2 inc 4". When it turned into 45x95 (I think) it was confusing, and harder to remember. That was one of the last places old measurements lived on.

I like that there are many systems. Because it makes me having to constantly calculate and compare.

I like the metric system for weight, volume and speed.

But for nautical I only use Knots and Distance. I think it should be illegal to use the metric system while traveling at sea.

Thus I also prefer to measure my boat in feet.

Perhaps it has to do with the UK equivalent to the metric system.

Here we say 1.5 meter. In USA they say, smaller than a deer, bigger than a bicycle.

Cats and dogs. It means bigger than usual raindrops. Still smaller than cars and horses?

The pound inch miles dozen system :pepe_happy:

I think the, It's pissing down, sounds similar to something we would say.

The references to Ducks and frogs are self explanatory while the cats and dogs is a mystery to me.

Now I begun thinking that in a country where rain is very common. There will naturally be more and broader expressions for describing the rain.

Carpenter. Still think of planks in inches.Because they are from inches but then they are planed so a 2 by 3 are no longer 50x75 but 45x70

It helos when thinking about the larger ones. is it 220 or 225 ? 225/25 is 9 so it has to be 220.

I think it was easier to remember 2 by 9 than 45x220 It was less numbers, made it more simple.

@carolen @MummaBear @EvolLove @inscius fascinating, I just figured the rest of the world was using different units, but the same process.

I did always wonder about recipes that call for grams of flour, but I assumed that was because flour settles a lot (this is why you sift, or at least fluff it before measuring). So weight would be more accurate/reproducible.

Cooking should be Liter deciliter milliliter

      @MummaBear @inscius @EvolLove it is weird here

(road) distances in miles but petrol sold in litres

Beer sold in pints but spirits in 25cl measures

Milk sold in pints but metric equivalent has to be put on the canister (e.g. 4 pints {2.272l})

I still weigh myself in stones and pounds (always will) but don't know if Kids These Days weigh themselves in Kilos
