   The German wird "Zeug" means "stuff".

   And it also was useful stuff for the lazy person who - a long time ago - created these words:

   - Flugzeug (fly thing) = plane
   - Spielzeug (play thing) = toy
   - Feuerzeug (fire thing) = lighter
   - Werkzeug (work thing) = tool
   - Nähzeug (sew stuff) = sewing kit
   - Fahrzeug (drive thing) = vehicle
   - Grünzeug (green stuff) = greens
   - Bettzeug (bed stuff) = bedding
   - Rüstzeug (armour stuff) = equipment
   - Schlagzeug (beat thing) = drumset

     @jensclasen Also see: "Stoff", which almost literally means "stuff".

     As in
     - Wasserstoff = water stuff, hydrogen
     - Kohlenstoff = coal stuff, carbon
     - Stickstoff = suffocating stuff, nitrogen
     - Sauerstoff = sour stuff, oxygen
     - Brennstoff = burning stuff, fuel
     - Kampfstoff = fight stuff, weapons materiel
     etc

     @tml I would say Stoff means cloth and material, not really stuff, which is closer to "things" often
