     Chat is such a damned hard problem, made harder by the fact that there are multiple open source federated solutions which are piles of crap, but their users insist on pretending that they're good.
     
     Myself I use a fork of Mattermost (pkt.chat) which has treated me very well the past few years.
     
     It's closed to new registrations but if you want to poke around, I can give you an invite code...
