In Hong Kong, with concrete and steel surfaces and weird radio reflections everywhere, it's not at all a safe assumption to make that my tablet in my left hand and my phone in my right would report me as being in the same place as myself, or even within 100 m of myself.

If you are creating routes to follow in a geolocation-based game, please please please set up your start point and your end point outdoors, not indoors where, depending on the device used, it may be impossible to ever be detected as being located.

@clacke now I know what you're talking about.

If you play on a Samsung, the game will complain all the time that it lost your location.

Play on a Huawei instead. It will happily report that it knows exactly where you are, even if exactly where you are right now is 200 m west of where you were a second ago, and your 500 m straight line walk was in fact a 1700 m long zig zag walk.

@kuba I have a location I can easily reach because I happen to live on top of it, so I have access to the podium where that location has open sky above it.

If you don't live here, your phone may or may not be able to say that you're at the spot inside the mall.

@kuba Yeah you were joking, but my comment is that there is a tiny bit of truth to it, as some "rooftops" are walkable "ground" five floors up from the "natural" (not actually natural) ground.

The GPS info is what you get from the OS in the phone. The manufacturers have different approaches to handling uncertainty.

@clacke I was kidding a bit with the previous comment.
It seems game is either "smart" or "locals"-only. Maybe you can use external GPS module that will be able to provide the milimetre-precise fake location =D

By "if you live here" I mean if you're a resident of this particular tower block and have physical access to the podium and its open sky, not whether you have residence in the city or not.

@clacke amusing myself with an idea that some game would accidentally/randomly put one of stops somewhere in the Kowloon Walled City (TIL it was demolished more than 30 years ago) requring 1m precision =D

@mansr I've been thinking that two players in a party could have their shared center of gravity as the party's location, but instead what it does is that if you stray too far apart it dissolves the party.

@clacke Could accuracy be improved by linking two phones with the promise that they will be within, say, 1 m of one another?

@mansr Outside the game, as a general idea, yeah, that should work and I would want it.
