     Melbourne's train system still ran on ancient 286 computers until .. 2012 I think? I mean, it's really really fucking hard to replace a train system controller, that runs every day non-stop. You're talking about replacing an engine in a car while it's running.

     @Vo if I remember correctly, some systems in current Boeing aircraft are still updated by loading a program or config file from a floppy disk -- or perhaps at this point by a solid state device acting as an off the shelf floppy drive connected to the floppy controller inside the computer locker.

     Time to get an EPROM programmer and make our own ROMS. Custom logic chip doesn't work any more? We'll just replace it with this totally-not-overkill ARM processor that consumes 200x more power. We will attach parts to you until you're a poor sorry bastardization of the original AT hardware that powered you .. a man-made retro horror .. begging for someone to put it out of its misery.
