   the big supermarket has an "algorithm" where they "randomly" check people's carts at the self-checkout. I was there maybe 20 times and was checked once, the first time. I see a lot of black and brown people get checked. I'm curious whether they just racially profile or whether there's cameras that track sus behavior.

     @kaia I'm never checked. Do the people who get checked have receipts? My headcanon is that they don't check you if they see that you have a receipt.

     @kaia probably. when i worked at the supermarket our boss would sometimes watch the cameras and complain about who may or may not look like a potential thief we should "keep an eye on". (we had radio comms). somehow those where always immigrant looking single moms :blobupsidedown:

     @kaia However, if you want to leave the Fnac shop at Chatelet-les-Halles (center of Paris, France), you have to show your receipts and the content of your bags to the guards

     @kaia there are multiple companies that make self checkouts. one of them has integrated cameras and is very very good at detecting theft, like all the tricks people use to get items past the scanner, and it just flags them for checking instead of straight up accusing them of theft.
