     @sun a few years ago furries had this huge drama about closed species. basically, open species are open to everyone, and you can make your own characters of those species without needing permission from anyone (which is how artistic expression is supposed to work). however, closed species are considered the property of a certain artist, and you "need" permission to join them and create your own characters, either by purchasing an official adopt (premade character) or make-your-own slot. the drama came from a few furries not asking for permission to draw new characters in a closed species. it's incredibly retarded, there's no actual copyright of anything of a class of ideas, but some furries try to rent seek and gatekeep their own species

     @sun @i the funniest thing is that some closed species literally functioned like nfts. you had to pay an artist to mint a premade character, and they artificially limited the supply to a set number

     @sun @zonk There are a lot of artists and their followers that have views on copyright that'd make even the RIAA blush. I'm pretty sure they'd try to suck the memory out of your mind if they could, were you to run afoul of their sensibilities.
