maybe one of my most profound and fundamental disagreements over free and open source software (in relation to some other FOSS activists) is that I see FOSS as a mean to an end, as a smaller but very important and accessory fight in relation to other much bigger fights, whereas some activists may see FOSS as an end in and of itself (does that even make sense? I warned you, this is fucking raw)

Karen Sandler (karen@floss.social)'s status on Thursday, 17-Oct-2024 22:53:50 JST Karen Sandler @anna I absolutely hear what you are saying. I always like to say that software freedom is in the *service* of the fundamental human rights and social justice issues. It's not the cause itself, but without software freedom it's hard to imagine any way of improving our societally embedded tech in ways that could prevent the abuses that are endemic systemically today.

Anna e só (anna@friend.camp)'s status on Thursday, 17-Oct-2024 22:53:52 JST Anna e só @skadi gosh, I don't know? the thing that gets me is that I feel it fails to truly encapsulate solutions I'd like to see in the fight against the horrors perpetuated and facilitated through technology, which is why sometimes I tend to see it as accessory rather than a principal fight

Anna e só (anna@friend.camp)'s status on Thursday, 17-Oct-2024 22:54:21 JST Anna e só I hate to be person who's always repeating the line about how we need to think systemically, but this tendency of thinking about FOSS as an isolated element rather than a reflection of and an actor in systems of systems drives me up the wall

Anna e só (anna@friend.camp)'s status on Thursday, 17-Oct-2024 22:54:22 JST Anna e só I support FOSS and contribute to FOSS and I'm involved in discussions and spaces relating to the bigger picture of technology and its role in our lives because I'm a technologist and this is one of the ways I fight, BUT being cognizant of the fact that this is a tiny portion of a very complex system of systems

Karen Sandler (karen@floss.social)'s status on Thursday, 17-Oct-2024 22:54:41 JST Karen Sandler @anna OSCON EU let me give a keynote on this topic ages ago (2016!), which I think is still available but my thoughts were pretty nascent on the issue, and I think you say it better than I did then.
I think putting the cause of software freedom in its place does not diminish from its importance but rather explains why we need it so badly to actually deal with the overarching problems we face in the world how it is today.
