Probably no new arguments for you here, but NOYB has summarized it best for me: https://noyb.eu/en/firefox-tracks-you-privacy-preserving-feature

Tracking and advertising are orthogonal, you can have the latter without the former. The main challenge is that context-based ads (as opposed to tracking-based ads) don't work very well for websites that don't have much relevant context, such as news sites. I'd argue that news sites should either be subscription-based or public funded. The latter already happens to some extend in the EU.

I do believe many folks are just exaggerating the facts about the current browsers situation without actually trying to understand what #Mozilla is doing.

Also I'm pretty sure those same folks where not even using Mozilla Firefox in the first place!

Let's stop the abstract drama and maybe we can talk about facts?

I do believe in differential privacy (https://blog.cloudflare.com/have-your-data-and-hide-it-too-an-introduction-to-differential-privacy/), and from what I can see it is being implemented correctly by Mozilla.

If we don't offer a privacy preserving alternative to what is currently available for the marketing industry, we will never solve the problem ... because we will never live in a world without ads, unless you decide to replace entirely the current economic system.

Please let me know your thoughts, why you think I'm just plain wrong or even tell me how wrong I am about the economic system or differential privacy, I love being challenged!

Thanks to @MiloWinterBurn, @falcennial, @TeflonTrout and @idlestate for encouraging to debate on this subject!

Have your data and hide it too: an introduction to differential privacy
Providing software and web services that deliver value for users often requires measuring user behavior. In this blog we discuss emerging cryptographic and statistical techniques that enable collecting such measurements without violating user privacy.

It really sucks to be in a world where you have to choose between two vendors for the tools you must use to access most of your life, both of which have clearly stated they are actively working against both your best interests and the best interests of society. Of course, there's an alternative — various third parties, many of which are actively malicious and none of which are remotely reasonable choices when it comes to security, feature parity, or anything else. Today this is about browsers, but the fact that I have to specify is its own problem.
