   GNU Taler can't replace cryptocurrencies, I looked into it since Fedi hates crypto. It can't act equivalently.

     @sun@shitposter.world GNU Taler is not intended as an equivalent to cash like cryptocurrency is.
     
     It is specifically meant that buyers can shop anonymously while merchants can still be identified for legal compliance and taxing.

     @SuperDicq @sun Yeah, I see GNU Taler more as like a *much* better way to have mainstream online payment processors.
     While cryptocurrencies are like State-less/anarchist money for better or worse that's kind of challenging to use in a legal manner.

     Cryptocurrency certianly has its place, I think cryptocurrency is like the equivalent of cash but online and international. A good way to send money to friends or buying goods from private individuals without going through a third party.

     @sun@shitposter.world Yeah these are also the types of projects I would like to point out when people say stuff "What's the point of GNU anymore it's just a bunch of shell utilities that can be easily replaced?"
     
     GNU has become more than an operating system. There are many projects under GNU now that if successful can have a real positive impact on society at large like GNU Taler and GNU Health.

     @SuperDicq @sun Yeah but effectively it explains why it's kind of stuck to non-mainstream, kind of like if society would go entirely cashless (oh shit) but people would still use the cash they had between themselves, or if you'd use money from a non-existant/rogue/… state.

     It's quite a complicated project to fully fathom but you should read about it when you have the time.

     @sun @SuperDicq For me that's a small part of it, like I don't see lawful businesses massively adopting any kind of crypto-currencies until the legal parts, like yes taxes, are sorted out enough so that they can rely on it.
     Specially as said taxes has an influence on how much you charge people.
