    Republicans really, really, really don’t want women to vote:

      @cobalt @timo21 @ThomHartmann @_L1vY_

      Some of us males also can run into issues. I was born overseas at Johnson Air Force base in Japan which no longer is there. I spent a good bit of time chasing down how to get a certified copy of my birth certificate so we could get passports . All I had was a copy and it was almost illegible. If anyone else has a similar problem it's not a traditional birth certificate it's called a Consular Report of Birth Abroad AKA Form FS-240. Here is where to go to get one.

      @timo21 @ThomHartmann @_L1vY_ Glad to see this information because I had no idea I’d have to get a copy of my marriage certificate! Birth certificate too for me. This will be time-consuming and expensive. I’d think it should be the case for women not to be penalized where men are not. Thus a request for birth certificate no charge should be the standard when it’s only for a Real ID.

      @ThomHartmann The move to Real ID required people to document themselves in ways similar to the SAVE act. Getting the marriage documents for Real ID was a giant headache for a huge number of women. I suspect many gave up. But many people also had trouble with the proper birth certificates, based upon what I witnessed at the DMV while getting my Real ID.

      @_L1vY_ @nerb @cobalt @ThomHartmann yes, I got my Real ID in New Mexico and the people born on the local Pueblos had a difficult time with birth certificates, as did people from rural areas. Apparently the midwives didn't keep good records.

      @nerb @cobalt @timo21 @ThomHartmann Yes, it is not exclusive to women. There are a lot of different groups who may be affected and struggle with this.
      (But systematically it has a drastically differential effect on women's access.)

      @nerb I also had to help a US friend whose mom was born on a base in Germany get the mom’s birth certificate. Theoretically it’s easy, there is a website (albeit in German) … but you gotta transfer 10€. That’s fairly difficult from a US bank account and can be impossible. I paid it from my German account.

      @ThomHartmann The thing is, and I don't know how my fellow Mastodonians feel, I would never vote illegally because I would never go to jail for a politician. I tend to think anyone who would vote illegally as a premeditated act has to be the biggest fool on earth. Go to jail for a politician? Really? No way, Jose. Not even for the ones I like!
