I generally want to handle moderation on a case by case basis, but holy shit some instances are just made of absolute assholes lol.
I hope we won't end up having a massive de-federation list. Most of the fediverse is pretty chill, just gotta watch out for these cringe fringe instances with dumb cunts on them

In general, I don't want this instance to become one where you walk on eggshells, but at the same time I don't want this to turn in to a shit fest where harassment flies back and forth over, in the grand scheme of things, stupidly trivial things.

So yeah, if an instance is full of shitlords that harass our members and moderators don't care we will defederate with instances. Some instances which don't align with the rules of our own we will more gradually handle moderation for (eg. some instances we block media from or silence instead)

@thibaultmol I think fedisearch was an interesting idea, but it did kind of lead to basically DOSing instances with the flood of requests it made.

Basically until yesterday #Fedsearch WAS a search engine that did full text search on as many posts across the fediverse that it could get it could find. (but you can opt out of it by using the mastodon settings)
It was actually pretty useful to find certain people with niche interests but that don't realize you really need to # things properly

@thibaultmol Mastodon DOES support full text search if you install ElasticSearch on your instance (we plan to do that eventually)

@LunaFoxgirlVT yeah, I can imagine. Fair enough. Would be cool if there was some built in way that just bundled all posts from an hour and then offered that as a compressed file to download in bulk you know.
But that'll never happen, because like you explained yesterday, fediverse don't want any kind of centralization even if it's a search engine like this.

@LunaFoxgirlVT I am wondering if the protocol shouldn't have something about instances affinities with other instances.
Not for people obviously, but for instances it would make sense to have other instances tell you their affinity with so and so with an optional comment if possible.
The reasons could be many.
- problems like you just mention
- problems of federation (noisy traffic)
- poor uptime
- ...

Pretty sure there is already plenty of protocols out there that have something alike that could be included into the fediverse.

Yes, that's basically my point.
Federation happens at a server to server level, it's basically automation and not very human except in the manual exclusion list.
So I wonder if some "affinity score" or something wouldn't help.
Making it generic would also avoid flame-wars between servers but instead focus on being globally good on all fronts.

@tessa_vt nah it's okay. It was only a matter of time before shitlords like that show up. At least with the fediverse we have more control over our experience, unlike the birdsite.
