   I was in a wine village today and it was super nice. people were saying hello to each other, stopping to chat. very hobbit-esque. wine people are good people.

     @kaia@brotka.st closest thing to wine village experience i have is living in sonoma county for a bit on the russian river, was on a plot of land against a winerys grapes, it was mostly just mexicans though.

     @mangeurdenuage typical German way is to ignore neighbors as much as possible and to shout at them when they don't mow their lawn or if they mow their lawn at inconvenient times for you (all times)

     @vriska @kaia @mangeurdenuage how do you not? you're social competency will always confuse me. it's so much nicer to mind your own business, i get kinda freaked out when i walk by somebody and they say hello, usually its just a worker who's so utterly bored slacking off though so its uncommon
     glad to see germany is similar in this regard

     @mia @vriska @kaia @mangeurdenuage baldone makes some sense, feel like its the right balance of tiny and having something for that.
     i've never experienced the friendless to that extent but maybe thats tourists privelage or something idk lol. could also be poor luck or not knowing how to talk to people, but yeah thats definitely different experience than i got out in most of kurzeme or now living in the city here. latgale is a bit more talkative i think on account of all the russian influence, but not necessarily too friendly

     @faggotracist1488 @vriska @kaia @mangeurdenuage baldone. folks seemed very friendly once you got to know them. most kept their distance because we were clearly tourists but they opened up quickly and didn’t turn down offers to help them with random stuff (which is something germans are terrified of especially in southern regions)

     @vriska @kaia @mangeurdenuage in eastern europe you can get lots of nightly conversation from drunk russian bums. for the locals that's still taboo though atleast here idk about the rest of europe but like latvia and finland atleast both have the "most introverted countries" type of reputation. I've seen articles of west euroes complaining about it though so it surely isn't everywhere.
     
     but seriously what do you get out of small talk with people you dont know, and having to keep up with random gestures all the time? nothing, it's a waste of time that you can also easily fuck up and get quite uncomfortable with very quickly
     
     though when i lived in a small village here probably every few people i walked by would say hi or good day but that wasn't very many
