One thing I appreciate about fedi is that it can't just shut down out of nowhere

@Flaky@furry.engineer The problem I see with Bsky is that it pays for its usability with a kind of decentralization that brings it very close to centraliztion. The network is comprised of many modules that are theoretically interchangeable, but in practice the people behind Bsky host critical and resource-intensive modules and if they were to shut down, it would be hard to recover. It's still better than a fully proprietary network, though, where that chance is 0%.

@volpeon the big issue (outside of UX ofc) is data portability. People have sentimental value to their post history, and it's not out of the question they want to keep that even if they have to move instances.

Bluesky seems to be nailing this as part of their plans, and fedi would be better trying to bring account portability in, even if it means a drastic change to ActivityPub.

@volpeon @Flaky there are a few Fedi server implementations that almost nobody uses that have nomadic identity, it's being developed but imo everything on fedi is being developed more carefully than bluesky, while bluesky delivers things faster (they also have money which helps)
