      The iOS Continental Drift Widens
      from @gruber
      What’s happening with Apple Intelligence and iPhone Screen Sharing this year is what I expect to happen with every new product or service Apple creates that integrates with iOS: they will come late, or never, to the EU.

      @antranigv @gruber @wezm Well it's still limited to 3G and wouldn't be able to do RCS and other new things.

      Does it even have a modern browser? Saying it can run "the latest version of app modern software" is a bit of a stretch if we're only talking about kernel, glibc, and some other tools and libraries. It would have a modern TLS stack so that's good.

      Is the mail client getting patches? (And what is the client software?)

      @antranigv @wezm It’s easy to see why Apple doesn’t make that possible. But neither do any major Android handset makers.

      @gruber @wezm unfortunately true.

      But if makers allow it, then amazing things happen.

      I’ve been daily driving my Nokia N900 for couple of weeks now. It’s a phone from 2009 and runs latest version of all modern software.

      @gruber @wezm it might even end up been more useful. I mean both Android and iOS are toy operating systems. I would love to have Linux or NetBSD on my *looking around* 10+ outdated iOS devices in the house.

      We do that with MacBooks anyway.

      @wezm It's a cool idea and as a nerd I endorse it, but you think this should be legally mandated for all devices?

      @daringfireball "I mean why stop here? Why not mandate that users be allowed to delete the entire OS?" Yes, exactly. They should mandate this!

      Old devices that work fine, especially iPads that Apple stops supporting become e-waste where it should be possible to replace iOS with Android or Linux. I recently bought a Pixel phone. First thing I did was replace the OS with GrapheneOS. This should absolutely be possible on iOS devices too.

      @feld @gruber @wezm Claws. But Mutt works as well. More of an Alpine user myself.

      For browser: modern WebKit browser wrapped in QT, works fine. It’s slow since it’s a low powered device, but it works.

      More powerful devices like the Droid 4 with Maemo-Leste render web pages MUCH faster.

      It’s the Devuan repository after all.

      @antranigv @gruber @wezm I just saw there was a project to provide hardware upgrades for the N900 that never materialized, that would have been nice
