https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/mnt-reform-next I don't _need_ a new laptop, and this would be worse than my Yoga 7x in many ways (screen, battery life, size, weight, performance), but it has a mechanical keyboard and a fully open hardware design, and comes in purple. I love what @mntmn is doing and would love to support their work. 🤔
I spend a lot of time looking at code & terminals, all of which are set in a monospace font. In 2017 I paid a large amount of money for a font: PragmataPro. It's certainly a luxury, but I consider it a professional expense for something that I use for hours almost every day. The font is designed by Fabrizio Schiavi in Italy. In order to support his efforts I'm passing on that Fabrizio is running a 40% off sale, so it's a great time to buy PragmataPro. http://fsd.it/shop
> kartoffels is a game where you're given a potato and your job is to implement a firmware for it
You can play it online, or via `ssh kartoffels.pwy.io`. You implement the solutions in no_std Rust, and upload them to the game, where I assume it runs them (I haven't tried yet). Interestingly the tooling produces a binary for a custom riscv64 target, not Wasm as I was expecting.
> Coles and Woolworths are both rolling out smart trolleys, with Coles announcing on Wednesday it had partnered with Instacart's AI-enabled trolleys that can also send targeted advertising to customers as they shop.
The people building this shit should be ashamed for making the world worse.
> Equipped with gamified capabilities, customers will also have the chance to win discounts by spinning a digital wheel on the trolley's screen at checkout.
Android is worse than iOS in almost every way¹. _However_, I just visited https://loops.video/ tapped 'download the APK' and installed an app. This makes it all worth it. I can install software I trust to my device from a website on the internet—what a concept.
¹ After 16 years as an iPhone user I switched to Android in September.
Yesterday while preparing to deploy the new https://linkedlist.org/ I ran `rm -r linkedlist` in my infrastructure repo instead of `rm -r volumes/linkedlist`, which deleted my work from the last hour. Fortunately https://github.com/wezm/zfs-autosnap snapshots my home directory every hour and there was a 30 min old snapshot that had the bulk of the work, just had to add back a couple of missing lines. 😌 #ZFS saves me once again.
@daringfireball "I mean why stop here? Why not mandate that users be allowed to delete the entire OS?" Yes, exactly. They should mandate this!
Old devices that work fine, especially iPads that Apple stops supporting become e-waste where it should be possible to replace iOS with Android or Linux. I recently bought a Pixel phone. First thing I did was replace the OS with GrapheneOS. This should absolutely be possible on iOS devices too.
I'm hosting an Australian mirror of repo.chimeralinux.org. This speeds up downloads for folks in this part of the world, especially package updates. I think it may also be beneficial for folks in parts of Asia too.
The mirror is hosted on a server running Chimera Linux. I've written a post describing how to use it and a bit of background of how I set it up:
System76's COSMIC desktop had its first alpha release. I've been building and trying it out here and there as it was developed. It was still rough around the edges last time I tried it (a month or so ago) but I'm hoping it is what will allow me to make the switch to Wayland soon https://system76.com/cosmic
Feedlynx, is a self-hosted tool that helps you collect links to read or watch later in an RSS feed. There's a Firefox extension and iOS Shotcuts workflow to make adding links easy. Plus it has an adorable mascot!
@MonaApp feature suggestion for you consideration: would it be possible to automatically do “load from remote server” when tapping on a non-local toot? This could be automatic or controlled by a setting.
I’m on a single user instance and for pretty much any toot that I want to see the replies to I first tap on it, then find load from remote server item in the menu to populate all the replies.
Wow so much commentary about systemd today. Lots of talk about how there are no decent alternatives. Dinit seems like a viable alternative to me and has been working great on my Chimera Linux system where it is the default init. https://davmac.org/projects/dinit/
