@admin @VisualStuart When libertarians start by talking about the importance of freedom, they win me, but when they scramble to justify a lack of positive liberties through callous disregard for the material conditions of the poor, they lose me. They completely fail on regulatory issues. Historically capitalists have only ever voluntarily self-regulated for the purpose of externalizing costs and creating barriers to competition.

SlightlyCyberpunk (admin@mastodon.slightlycyberpunk.com)'s status on Sunday, 01-Sep-2024 14:00:29 JST SlightlyCyberpunk @VisualStuart You know...Libertarian types sometimes like to talk about how "the free market" could better ensure safety by having some kind of system of private competing inspection companies...and I think this incident alone is enough to prove how insane that it.
First of all if the government cert isn't worth a damn, there seems to be a market for competitors anyway...so where are they?
But even if we accept that the government monopoly drives down demand...where's the competitors advertising that their facilities don't have these problems? Heck they too could have submitted a FOIA request for those same reports at any time. They could have been advertising about these reports for months, if not years. But clearly safety and sanitation don't sell. More profitable if everyone agrees to look the other way...
