   part of why the thought of the fediverse going mainstream scares me is because legislators are passing laws and stuff relating to social media right now, it applies just to companies so far but if the fediverse manages to replace twitter as one of the most popular social medias ever, what laws will they pass next?? Will they make life harder for the average fedi admin??

The social media platforms that get big do so because of telemetry and other silly shit cattle love, there being venture capital to throw nearly unlimited hardware to accommodate any influx and, last but not least, an engagement farming algorithm. You can't stroke your ego or farm dollarydoos by spamming ragebait on the Fediverse, dead (=good) platform.
