It just goes to show what I have always postulated, the Western politicians are weak and double-minded, and think the whole war in Ukraine is an act. So get that money handed over. #ukraine #europeanunion

@WashingtonIrving @notsoloud @VikingChieftain @kimwulff I don't defend Merkel on anything. But I think I should defend her on this one.

Merkel was one of the few (during her time as chancellor maybe the only) western politicians that saw through Putin.

She was always a master of the possible and too much of a "realist" for any real strategy against russia.

Not by chance did russia start the full-scale invasion after she left office.

@t_mkdf @notsoloud @VikingChieftain @kimwulff This happens when democratic states let dictatorship propaganda reign free.:RT news for example. They've got some fines in Germany for not being objective. They must have laughed they asses off. Damage they've done is very hard to undo. Plus Schroder and Merkel. Everything they've done was like they were russian assets. Schroder for money, Merkel for ideology? Being from east Germany?
Putin must have been very pleased with them.

@notsoloud @VikingChieftain @kimwulff a lot of people in Germany, especially in the east, did have (and many still do have) positive opinions about russia and Putin. Politicians and businesses had "fruitful" connections with russia.

And these resurface now in view of the situation in Ukraine and the elections.

Maybe. Sometimes I really don't understand politics.

The response sounds like "we give lots of money to Ukraine, but it's not actually important, so now we'll give a bit less".

Then why give money at all?

No. Tell them Ukraine is important and you're proud of it.

They’re probably trying to counter AfD and friends. If they win the election, the aid will dry up. I think it’s just necessary political talk.

But why would cutting Ukraine aid win over voters?

That seems to be the real issue here.

I think the statement might have more to do with domestic politics than actual reality. Scholz party isn’t doing well and he needs to win back voters before the coming election. I’m sure one of our German friends here in Mastodon can give more details.

Tanks will not decide this war, MRAPs won’t decide this war, fighter airplanes won’t decide this war, artillery won’t decide this war… You can continue using that as an argument for not supplying Taurus if you so wish. But the fact remains that the Kerch Bridge would have been a memory if they had been supplied.

They get LOTS of other shit. Taurus will not decide this war. Ammunition supply, logistics and soldiers getting paid will. And Scholz provides more of that than anyone else in Europe. His rhetoric is catastrophic, but what he does is a miracle, given how post-war Germany was set up.

@t_mkdf @notsoloud @VikingChieftain @kimwulff I remember when US spied on Merkel. I was infuriated! And I couldn't understand why the reaction form Germany was so tame. Now I think there must have been reason for that. And we've never got to know what they've found out. Maybe for the sake of german people? How do you tell them :"Sorry folks, you've been duped for so long?"
Would they even believe? Or would they just get more angry and cut the ties with USA?
I'am not saying I am 100% sure, but...
