@benda There's not going to be any mass boycott of Google just like there's no mass boycott of X. But governments can do far more to reign in these abuses. And THAT'S what voting and pressuring legislators is about. Because Google doesn't care about you anymore, but legislators DO want your vote.

Andrew (antran22@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Aug-2024 03:42:28 JST Andrew @lauren I don't think we should put any trust in the capitalistic government to reign in capitalistic corporation. We need to play their game and vote with your money.
Stop giving ad revenue to Google. This can be done by either adblock or stop using Google. Sure, we might not do a mass boycott of Google, but what about a gradual shift? Help your parents switch. Spread the word to friends. With all the crap they are pushing, I doubt Google's results are any better to any other competitive now.

And adtech tracking is absolutely a threat to people's safety. It's a threat when a closeted kid's browsing activity starts showing their abusive parents signs of what they were looking at. It's a threat when it reveals someone might be pregnant in a place where that's unsafe. It's a threat when it gives Google someone's full browsing history to hand over to police or let them dragnet-scan.
If you don't care, 🤷. But guilting ppl is bad behavior.

Lauren Weinstein (lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Aug-2024 04:50:29 JST Lauren Weinstein @dalias @antran22 Don't worry about anonymous ad tracking. Worry about data brokers who deal in PII every day. Worry about governments tracking you. Worry about the legislation supported by both parties to require government IDs for age verification to use the Internet, starting with social media. THAT'S what you should be worrying about.

Rich Felker (dalias@hachyderm.io)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Aug-2024 04:50:30 JST Rich Felker @lauren @antran22 Adtech is user hostile and a malware vector. Blocking ads is non negotiable. IDRGAF if someone's income is based on ads. They can either find an honest business model instead or use first party, human vetted, non-tracked ads that won't be caught by ad blockers if they can find someone willing to pay them for that.

Lauren Weinstein (lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Aug-2024 04:50:32 JST Lauren Weinstein @antran22 I don't believe in ad blockers, and don't use them. Pay with money or pay by watching the ads. Ad blockers cause the most harm to smaller organizations that depend on ads and have no reasonable other ways to keep necessary income going.
