Yes ... following people and actually engaging matters on Mastodon.
Regretfully, too many who were used to larger accounts on Twitter were accustomed to hanging out in DM rooms with their friends and just sending out posts to be algo-pushed. No real engagement.
This platform is different in that being social is part of it. It takes a bit of effort.

Yeah ... lots of folks didn't like the "no algorithm" and the appearance of less activity. So, they went back to Twitter.
(I say "appearance of less activity" because so much of the "activity" on Twitter is fake. Fake followers. Fake engagement. RTs from fake accts. Fake views. Manipulation of posts for algo boosts. etc.)
The addiction to the appearance of popularity is a huge problem.
@VirginiaMurr @dannotdaniel @jeff @tchambers haha goin back to twitter from the fedi is like climbing out of the toilet, finding the new emvironment too dry, and diving back in!
just to evangelize for a moment, following over 1000 people is the answer I found to the fedi's quiet room illusion. 1000 people's thoughts are the minimum amount of tl volume I need per day, as an extremely online person 😂😂
@VirginiaMurr @jeff @tchambers
half of MASTODON has accounts from November 2022 (I wasn't much earlier)
I thought that was from when he walked in with the sink, and the Trump thing was later (?)
sadly, many of those accounts are inactive...
