This is probably in a FAQ somewhere, but what determines what my federated feed looks like? I’m on two different instances, and I know my local feeds will look different, but is there an admin determining what instances are pulled in for the federated feed? #mastodon#federation#feed
@nedwharton though, on the other hand, if you go to mastodon.social and try to look at their federated timeline, you just can't.
It's literally so fast, it's unreadable.
Keep in mind that I didn't mention boosts or replies to those who are federated.
Boosts and replies, if they aren't federated by following, are federated on a "per post" basis.
So if someone boosts 1 post, it doesn't mean you'll see all posts from that user, but at the very least, you'll know the user exists so you can follow if you choose.
Things are very nuanced here and there's some fine lines of what's useable and what isnt, in terms of a federated timeline.
This place is still fairly new. I think we'll get there, in time.
@BeAware thanks, don’t quite understand the relays, but that’s interesting about the follows. Since I’m on a journalist heavy instance, I scan the local feed for news, but I always assumed looking at the federated feed would give me a much broader “Joe Sixpack” view of what’s on people’s minds. But from what you say it sounds like I’m still looking at kind of a limited bubble. I really can’t bear to go back to X or Threads etc.
