iced depresso (icedquinn@blob.cat)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 07:02:34 JST iced depresso @LunaDragofelis @Jessica they will all eventually fail because they have forced activation to cloudshit.
i had to mine out software from an apk site to activate a first gen a couple years ago.
i guess it makes sense to deprecate a genuinely useful product :blobcatdunno: (though maybe they feel like the ubiquity of smart tv's means there is no longer a need to make the dongles, which would be a reasonable take)-

iced depresso (icedquinn@blob.cat)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 07:04:20 JST iced depresso @LunaDragofelis @Jessica basically every tv is a smart tv now, which all run some hackneyed degenerate form of android, so google has already succeeded in conquering all TVs. whatever the chromecast does has been consumed by apps on said tv marketplaces, which just leaves the projector function (casting tabs and such.) i dunno what we're supposed to do for that, though, because i exclusively used chromecasts as projectors. -

iced depresso (icedquinn@blob.cat)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 07:06:43 JST iced depresso @Jessica @LunaDragofelis the chromecast basically has a limited form of 'apps' on itself. you do an exchange where it gets a URL and then the cast itself takes over playing it. i'm not sure how the chrome was done (like the youtube splash pages and the like.) it could be a tiny android package, or just an html5 template.
i could very well see the whole architecture being "give me a url and an html5 bundle" because this is what broadcast graphics actually are with caspar these days -

Jessica's new Main (jessica@kitsunes.club)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 07:06:44 JST Jessica's new Main @icedquinn@blob.cat @LunaDragofelis@buff.tomboyfan.club the Chromecast was pretty cool because most cast capable devices require you to open the app, whereas the Chromecast don't give a shit
But still it was doomed to fail because people don't mind using a remote most of the time
