I'd say they are the vultures picking the bones. The economic landscape changed when we offshored a lot of our manufacturing to China. The rural enclaves are the people who got left behind. They subsist on state building projects, trucking, and whatnot. I'm hoping we can get some of that back now that China has decided to burn us down. Biden got the ball rolling, Kamala needs to carry it forward.

Viking Chieftain (vikingchieftain@krigskunst.social)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 03:21:10 JST Viking Chieftain Yes, the real downward trend started with outsourcing to China. That took away the jobs that these communities depended on. I'm not sure how many of those jobs are really coming back. A lot of them will just go to Vietnam and India. Yes, Kamala will have to do her best to lure some of the jobs back and hopefully create a climate that allows new and old companies to manufacture things locally. It's not just good for the economy, but also good for the climate.

Eva Chaos (eva_chaos@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 03:21:12 JST Eva Chaos Tbh, you might not be able to tell if you looked at it from Google Street view and didn't pay attention to all the dollar stores and payday loan places. It's different from failing urban areas in that people try incredibly hard to maintain what they have, at least outwardly. You don't see it until you are in people's homes and then you realize the kids have never eaten a nutritious meal in their lives and there hasn't been running water in months.

There is absolutely no benefit to those things besides demarking the boundaries of dangerous neighborhoods so that you know Google sent you a way you ought not go and you need to turn around. I don't even understand how they make money by being anything other than a front for low-level money laundering.

Eva Chaos (eva_chaos@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 03:21:21 JST Eva Chaos It's just poverty, and by absolute numbers and not percentages, white rural America has the most. It's compounded by the fact that there are very few resources in the sticks compared to urban areas.

Viking Chieftain (vikingchieftain@krigskunst.social)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 03:21:21 JST Viking Chieftain I understand. Impoverished areas tend to have more problems with drug and alcohol abuse. If you ever watch one of those YouTube videos where they drive through poor towns, the ratio of liquor stores to regular stores is pretty high.

Religion definitely plays a factor in where you end up on the political scale. I don't think FAS victims are only in their circles, but it certainly doesn't help you in life.
