I know a dude who is not married because he and his not-wife would be unable to afford their house and kids due to welfare loss. That's an exception not a rule, but it's worth mentioning that they don't live a fancy lifestyle.

     I used to be on food stamps. Making fucking rice o roni from scratch because I FOUND spaghetti in my house.

     And about ten years later I've interviewed upwards into a gig that pays me very well and it doesn't feel like a "grind".
