   @tk Sometimes I wonder what the fuck even are HOAs for.
   Like for flats it makes sense as there's parts of the building in common, but homes?

     @lanodan @tk they exist for a couple reasons:
     
     1. to organize paying for things like private street repair or other shared resources like connected park space, pool, etc.
     2. to enforce minimum standards of behavior. This is because when your neighbor is a piece of shit human being and doesn't maintain his house, it makes your house go down significantly in value.

     @sun @tk Both of those being managed by the town/city over here and from the looks of things, involves a lot less horseshit.
     Which reminds me of some people getting sued by the city itself for not getting rid of effectively hoard.
     
     Meanwhile HOAs seems like micromanaged to the point where they'd nearly measure how long your "grass" is.

     on the other hand the reason you hear about them is when they really really suck, I think that most homes now are under a HOA and even if people chafe at them sometimes they aren't all nazis

     @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @sun@shitposter.world @tk@bbs.kawa-kun.com the problem is that when city does it, it has people paid for doing it that don't really care about having very high standards
     
     Meanwhile HOAs can get easily overtaken by people with way too much free time (and as such way too high standards), and that starts to suck hard.

     @ignaloidas @tk @lanodan yeah I think the issue is that a HOA is good because there is a minimum that you need people to care about a neighborhood, but they are bad because, again, people with pathological personalities take control of anything weakly guarded that has power over other people.
