I hate doing this because every time I do someone is in my replies saying "well *I* don't like it because *reasons*" and I honestly don't care, I'm just speaking to my experience and letting folks decide on their own.
I have good experiences on both the instances I post on re: moderation (Jorts and Treehouse) despite their vastly different approaches to the topic. Part of it is about maintaining reasonable expectations, part of it is about ethos. (ct)

The expectations part is easy to explain:
A lot of you have main character syndrome and genuinely relish catching a single bad poster/fascist/asshole in your replies because then it's your turn to toss cookies about it. ONE bad actor replying to you ONE time, is not a moderation issue. I name and shame these people, I don't try to burn down my own instance mods and admins because they didn't psychically predict some rando would type some dumb shit in my replies. Block and report exist.

And I can hear you getting mad and typing up "harassment is REAL Nina" like *I* an openly trans anarchist/antifascist don't know that. You missed where I said "ONE bad actor showing up in your replies is not a moderation issue." Entire servers full of Nazis trying to run you off the fedi, IS a moderation issue, DOES require a bit more than shaming and blocking etc; but many of you don't see the difference between these two scenarios because you don't live them and have unreasonable expectations.

The second point is about ethos. Even tho Jorts is lightly moderated, and indeed relies on folks defederating the instances to keep out low level annoying shit, mostly just defeding nazis troll farms, and Treehouse is much more actively moderated and responsive to all types of abusive behavior including brigading from angry libs who hate lefties almost as much as nazis, I don't have problems with how either server works.

The answer is ethos. What the folks running either server believe, what they're here for.
At their cores, both Jorts and Treehouse are antifascist. They are against nazis. They are against white supremacists. They are against anti-trans bigots, homophobes, racists, etc.
What they are NOT looking to do is "not hear bad noise."

Neither one is so desperate for "growth" that they want to tolerate awful people. Neither one is trying to do the least amount of work possible. Neither one wishes we could all get along and just post cat pictures. Their ethos, is compatible with mine. They're not simply "not these things." They are "against" these things. And again as an openly trans antifascist, I need the server I'm on to share my ethos, because a LOT of dogshit ppl of all stripes, are GONNA come for me.

Most of the servers you folks are on SAY they're the former kind of server/ethos, but are actually the latter. And thus their moderation is inconsistent and often mistakes victim for perp.
So it's not about technical approach, it's not about server rules, it's not about technicalities. The servers I'm on are more or less not playing Simon Says to keep as many people/as much content as possible.

It's not perfect, I still get randos, I still get instances where people might be over moderating a bit, or under moderating a bit; but it doesn't rise to the level of a PROBLEM because the ethos is there. Which is why my experience is generally "fine" or as "fine" as one can possibly expect online given how mad the shit I post always makes SOMEONE, even though their moderation policies and activities could not be further apart.
It's not the system, it's the intent.

@AnarchoNinaWrites I'm on Chitter because it's a robust queer coded server that is plausibly camouflaged enough to temporarily survive some sort of fascist crackdown. It's basically the last station before encrypted comms and sneakernet only for me.
