This has always been the downside of how a lot of FOSS is actually run: a single person, or small oligarchy, maintain absolute power over a project.
In the beginning it seems like a good idea. But if the project takes off, it always ends up held back by those who built it.
Just as mastodon is dramatically more popular, its leadership refuse to listen to those who want to drag it into the future.

I've been very critical of them for it and have been personally blocked in doing so. Fuck them, they're SO self-centered.🤦♂️

It is healthy to have a default, good server. It is unhealthy to demand people do a bunch of homework before signing up.
The correct answer is that our default server should be good. And if it is not, that’s what has to change.
