Ascending up a level yet again, from what @hrefna and @inthehands are saying:

The options and capabilities that mastodon provides ("affordances") both reflect and shape assumptions about what can or should be done. There are reasons we spend so much time talking about block lists. A very big one is because that's the only option that mastodon provides.
I desperately want us to imagine more than that.

Above, people climb out to discover the real world, full of real things, not mere shadows. Be like those people. Imagine there could be more than what mastodon shows you, and go find it.

  Something important that @inthehands is talking about here: It's going beyond blocklists. There are so many things we can do that aren't blocklists, and certainly aren't consensus blocklists. Quarantine is such an obvious and simple step and a time honored tradition for tackling these sorts of problems. As is a keyword embargo: require moderator review before posts with certain keywords make it through from people who aren't being followed, or equivalents thereof. https://hachyderm.io/@inthehands/112872266316450280
