Bricky (thatbrickster@shitposter.world)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jul-2024 04:35:17 JST Bricky @kaia Can confirm it's in the UK too. Grad IQs are around the same as those who never went to uni/college. Barrier of entry has been lowered to keep the system profitable.

which is kinda good and bad for men. the whole time we were worried that more women in academia made it difficult for women to "date up", to find a partner that makes more.
in Germany now if a guy (or girl) decides to become a heating technician or specialized welder or machinist, he can make more than someone with a master's degree in the social sciences.?? Humpleupagus ?? repeated this. -

Bricky (thatbrickster@shitposter.world)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jul-2024 04:41:50 JST Bricky @kaia In the UK, the reverse was true. More women now attend uni than men. Grads are told they can make more money by going to uni but what actually happened is that blue collar jobs were gatekept behind academia. If you don't go to uni, and put yourself in debt, you don't get the employment opportunities.
Germany may be a different story, for the UK it has been a disaster.

that sucks a lot! we have a good trade degree program here that's not university, but still a 3 year education. it's great to educate specialists in their area, think butchers, carpenters, electricians, but also IT specialists or bank clerks. -

Bricky (thatbrickster@shitposter.world)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jul-2024 04:53:30 JST Bricky @kaia This is what I mean. Why does a butcher need a uni degree? Over here you need one to join the police and nursing, yet the quality of those professions haven't improved. People have been caught flunking the exams or failing fitness tests, yet are still eligible to join.
Academia neglects experience. I remember when there was a drive to get women into tech, only to end in failure because most women weren't interested in that sector anyway. The aspiration of many teens, myself included, to join the video game industry burned up because the people graduating were incapable of using industry tools or doing what was expected of them. Worse, the institutions were sabotaging their courses for the sake of pass marks. My own college dropped OOP because the majority of students couldn't get their head around it, yet it's needed if you want to make sense of past mistakes in computing and why it was pursued. I digress.

Bricky (thatbrickster@shitposter.world)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jul-2024 04:54:01 JST Bricky @snacks Been there, done that. I neglected my coursework to focus on my job and my employer were happy to let me drop it because I was a fast learner who did what was asked. Apprenticeships are still of value, it's the way they're done that lets them down.
