Academia neglects experience. I remember when there was a drive to get women into tech, only to end in failure because most women weren't interested in that sector anyway. The aspiration of many teens, myself included, to join the video game industry burned up because the people graduating were incapable of using industry tools or doing what was expected of them. Worse, the institutions were sabotaging their courses for the sake of pass marks. My own college dropped OOP because the majority of students couldn't get their head around it, yet it's needed if you want to make sense of past mistakes in computing and why it was pursued. I digress.
