    *SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH*
i know la guerra sucia that gringos have had against Venezuela; especially after Chávez's passing. but Maduro is a dingbat. when you have Lula calling him out, i will listen to Lula.

yeah, Lula has been my barometer for Latin American politics for a long ass while. i trust Lula. i don't trust Maduro.

You say "Authoritarian Left" or "Tankie"; I say "Puritan Left", because they are pretty much the same: people who exploit Left ideology as a crutch to impose their own personal power vendettas and neuroses through state power.

We have more than enough of those jokers on the Right to face without also having to deal with these worms.

There seems to be quite a bit of centre right in that coalition opposing the authoritarian "left" as well, so idk.

      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@GNUmatic @blogdiva when 92% of the opposition votes for a single candidate, I'm not sure that's a right-wing power grab. Venezuelans are very much center left.

I've grown up under supposedly "left" authoritarian rule in East Germany and have *no* desire whatsoever to get 'em back. Less so after quite a *lot* of 'em still embraced Putin's fascist regime and imperialistic war in Ukraine.

But still - not knowing anything about Venezuela besides right wing trying a power grab and the authoritarian "left" clinging to it for supposedly the very same reasons - any options *besides* those two evils? Anything that would have a chance of winning?

@GNUmatic my rule of thumb: there is no such thing as a real left if it is authoritarian.

even th directorate of the proletarian was, in theory, supposed to be democratic but the Soviets never knew a power grab that they didn't like.

can't remember who is it that wrote that the only reason the USA joined Soviets in defeating the Germans was because each country saw the other & Germans as competition. to the writer, the soviets (and gringos) were fascist, not left or right.

Authoritarian left? Are there any good options, even? 🤔

      @GNUmatic

I can only second that. Dirk, I guess, is a few years older than me as I did not have a 'youth' under the regime. I was mainly a toddler and kindergarden child then.

What I lived through was the weird mixture of everything being renewed, allegedly made 'better' while communities were actually dying underneath. A lot of the things from back than I now understand with hindsight. And the whole thing is such a tragedy. Authoritarians ruined it for everyone to an extent that people will now cling to capitalism even though it kills us.

It's really weird living in that odd space between the two ideas, and for the longest time I was of the opinion that 'social(ist) democracy' is the sweet spot. But I am now forty-one years old and my whole millennial experience tells me that this ain't right either. It's rotten because everything is subsumed under the money people and their agenda.

And I honestly don't see too many purists. What I see is a radical simple truth.

      - we need to stick together
      - we need to fight those who have decided that their bank accounts justify death (fascists in a nutshell)
      - we need to deeply distrust any one who seeks power (not leaders....distrust the ones that WANT to be leaders)

That's how it is actually really easy to be "leftist" but still despise 'tankies' (authoritarian left).

And sidenote: I wish I was a better writer. There is something my heart wants to tell about those years after the fall of the wall but it doesn't come out right. Ever

Much of the open-minded youth left, heading west, the elderly remained and nowadays, to nobody's surprise on the actual left, former east Germany is mostly fascist territory.

It was easy enough for them. The one thing that stuck was blind anticommunism and the right delivers just that, presenting scapegoats for all the evil that happened afterwards when factories closed down one after the other, leaving people without jobs, stuck in denial. Can't be the praised capitalism, can it.

Trust me, it's a *slightly* different perspective once you *actually* had to endure the authoritarian rule during your *entire* youth - as I had to until we brought that wall down with mass protests, originally demanding *actual* socialism instead of that fake shit show.

Later on, when it was deemed safe to do so, the cowards and elderly came crawling out, said they didn't want any further "experiments", stating we're "one country" instead of the early claim of "we are the people".
