@kaia what kind of wine do you like?

Personally I prefer red. Usually Cabernet Sauvignon for the easy drinking. If I want something richer (thicker?) I go for Merlot.

Watch for the region it is made in. France, Australia, Chile, Italy, etc Don't drink wine with grapes grown in the UK 🫣

If the region isn't specified it is usually a mishmash of bad wines. Stay away.

Also, spend over $4. If the cost is equivalent to the cost of the bottle it comes in, that's bad grapes.

@kaia if you don't know which grape you like, I envy you, it means you get to try them out and find your favorites.

@selzero @kaia if you like your (red) wines with a stronger flavour, choose wines from more southern regions. Doesn't always work that way, there's some great wine from northern Italy with strong flavour like Lagrein, but in general it's a good rule of thumb.

@selzero @kaia Rather than “bad grapes” it’s frequently a blend of leftovers. What used to be called 2 buck chuck (Trader Joe’s) was notorious for occasionally having extremely good wine, but with very high variation.

People would buy a bottle of it, sample it in the parking lot, and if it was good, they’d go back and buy as much as they could afford.

Don’t know if it’s true anymore. It’s certainly no longer 2 dollars a bottle.

@kaia Prosecco (sparkling wine, so adapted to G*rman tastes)
(I don't know anything about wine) (I'm not worthy of being French)

@selzero @kaia I think, the best choices for a wine novice would be a Cabernet for a red, and a Sauvignon Blanc for a white. They are relatively neutral, but not generic.

Everyone will have a different opinion. My favourite is Pinot Noir.

@selzero @kaia But “good wine” is also a misnomer. Good wine is the wine that you like.

@kaia Also one general rule is:

      • white wine for fish, seafood, or white meat
      • red wine for red meat or white meat
      • strong red wine for strong red meat
      • weak red wine for any meat
      • greasy (?) (not dry) white wine for white meat
      • sugary wine for dessert

And the top secret tip is: if you go to a winery, you can ask the drunk guy selling the wine for advice
