I spent 8 hours automating a task that will easily save me several minutes over the next 10 years or so. MINUTES, I SAY!

@fribbledom Hours of experimenting saves you minutes of reading specifications.

Many engineers happily take that trade off.

@fribbledom @lisamelton Heh - talking to someone spending too much time editing that automation to handle all of the edge cases that I didn’t run into on the first round…

@fribbledom personally I don't automate things to save my time because often I prefer to do the manually anyway. I automate things to avoid human error, and so that I can turn over the process to someone else who would absolutely do it wrong if they had to do it without the automation. (Someone like a manager, perhaps a VP of IT.)

@fribbledom besides everything people have commented already, some tasks will be performed more reliably by your automation than by you

In my experience it's worth it, because if I find the code when I need it next time, I won't have to remember how I did it last time.
Not kidding. I could just document it of course, but I never find those notes.
Problem now is when the cron job fails after 20 years, I have no idea what it's for.

@fribbledom My justification is always "If it saves me from the potential misses of human error it's worth the time."
