   Yesterday I tried printing something on Linux with my family's ancient HP laserjet printer. It is so old that I don't think we have ever gotten it to work on anything newer than Windows 7, and I had also tried to print from it on Ubuntu some years back without any success.

   Installed HPLIP and plugged in the printer and it prompted me to install some (non-free :blobcatscared:) drivers. Once installed the printer motors turned on which was a good sign. Went to print something and...

   It works!!

     @kittynunu @blenderdumbass @ROllerozxa HP printers now seem to work with IPP, although HP offers proprietary filters to give you a less reliable experience.
     
     Ubuntu really shouldn't be suggesting malware to the user like that.

     @blenderdumbass @ROllerozxa I likely wouldn't have installed non-free drivers myself, unless it's for the purpose of figuring out how to get it to work with free software.

     @blenderdumbass @kittynunu A bootloader exploit for old iphones up to the 7 has been discovered I believe, so you can install GNU/Linux onto those iphones (not surprising as Samsung made many iphone SoC's).
     
     Porting isn't very complete, as few drivers are complete - typically you just get shell access and maybe framebuffer display output and no power management - but if more drivers are complete, the millions of old and now useless iphones floating around may be useful as low power webservers.

     @kittynunu @ROllerozxa If you already have one it is better than throwing it away and buying a new one. But if you don't. I mean. You could potentially get one to hack around with it. Try to do strange things it wasn't designed to do. Try to overcome overlords restrictions if you are up for such a thing.

     @blenderdumbass @ROllerozxa One could argue that using an old iPhone could reduce E-waste, but would I do that?

     Pretty much. it's; "tunnel everything over HTTP and force the printer manufacturer to use someone else's webserver, so they can't implement at least the transmission method wrong".
     
     It's horrible and people even do IPP over usb (http over usb), but is more reliable than any other printer-manufacturer implemented protocol.
